SeptemberMiscanthus Malepartus
Not one of the new varieties but tried and tested. The deep green leaves are quite broad with a silvery stripe down the middle. The plant is robust, it'll reach about 5ft typically but can get to almost 7ft if well suited. The plumes appear reliably every year and are reasonably early, often looking good in early September then keeping colour until November. The silky plumes are a rich reddish brown and usually borne freely in great profusion.
As the cold weather of Autumn approaches the leaves turn a rich, reddish colour, just like the best autumn tree foliage. In winter the foliage is brownish fawn colour - it still looks good and will do right up until you cut it all down in March before the new foliage begins to develop.
